“I  feel lucky and privileged to be leading the I-TECH Malawi team at a time of tremendous growth,” says Bateganya. “The past year has not only been a period of growth in terms of number of I-TECH staff, but in the programs we are implementing. This is also a time at which our support to address Malawi’s human resource gaps through targeted technical assistance is being matched by similar efforts in strengthening pre-service education–not only of nurses but also of medical students.”

Bateganya also discussed some of his goals for the program. “Going forward, my goal–our goal as a team–will be to make sure that US government support to the Malawi Government through PEPFAR/HRSA and CDC reaches as many people as possible. I’d also like to put focus on rolling out HIV prevention interventions that complement care and treatment, including Prevention with Positives and medical male circumcision.”

Dr. Bateganya, originally from Uganda, has been based at I-TECH’s University of Washington headquarters in Seattle for the last several years. He was instrumental in guiding I-TECH’s global HIV prevention, care, and treatment efforts, and played a key role in the creation of I-TECH’s online Tuberculosis Prevention Toolkit. With more than 16 years of experience in public health, medicine, and HIV and AIDS prevention, care and treatment, his work has brought him to Ethiopia, Guyana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, the United States, and Zambia.

Welcome, Dr. Bateganya!
